Judgement

The sentence to keep
An inner call is pushing you to change something important: the old is already over, and what is left is to recognize that and renew yourself.

In short

Upright
Judgement says a call to change is making itself heard. This call comes from you and at the same time from something larger than you.
Reversed
Reversed Judgement is about difficult transitions and resistance to transformation. You are facing a change that calls you, and you refuse to answer it, most often out of fear of the unknown.

Judgement upright

Judgement says a call to change is making itself heard. This call comes from you and at the same time from something larger than you. You are at a crossroads where a decision is asked of you. Sometimes something in you has already decided, and all that is left for your conscious mind is to follow with a fitting gesture. Old ways of believing and thinking, old situations, have died out without your noticing. This card indicates a new awareness, in direct contact with what is true, more than a simple change of circumstances. What matters is the call itself: it can concern something concrete and immediate or your whole way of seeing life, depending on the other cards and the subject of the reading.

The call can take the form of a vocation, an intellectual idea or a great truth that summons you. You may have to make a choice that demands total commitment. You may also volunteer for a task. The card announces a new perspective, a new meaning or another quality of life, sometimes the beginning of a new cycle or a new stage. For some people, it is like being born a second time or finding their true calling.

It is also a time of taking stock. Your conscience wakes you up and gives you the chance to make amends for your past faults and errors of judgment. You take inventory of your life, reassess your direction, accept responsibility for your past actions and put an end to repeating patterns. Like Justice, Judgement asks you to make peace with your past experience in order to go beyond it. Here, the focus is less on the meaning of your own life alone than on the nature of existence and the place you hold in it alongside all beings. This card marks a final decision about the past, a new current for the future, and always represents taking a definite step. It evokes completion, decision, the end of a stage.

Memory plays a large part. Nothing you have lived through, thought, wanted or buried disappears completely: it withdraws, stays latent, then comes back when the hour of truth arrives. This judgment comes from your own conscience awakened in front of your history, with no outside sentence. Understanding is no longer enough: the truth puts you back on your feet and gives you back your direction. You can no longer hide behind unconsciousness: what you have sown reappears and what you have built shows itself. This bringing to light is a matter of inner justice. It shows what deserves to last, what must be purified and what can be saved, discerning without destroying at random. Body, soul and spirit are called there to recover their unity. Deep within you, something can always hear the call and rise up.

The card's meaning is also one of elevation: you aspire to a higher state and to placing yourself above the purely material plane. In the image, the parents represent what the past has built: the father, what human reason has conceived of as wise, the mother, the heart and love. The child receives both and becomes their heir.

The child on the card is seen from behind. Your new existence therefore remains a mystery, and you don't really know yourself until you have heard the call and answered. The cross on the banner unites ordinary time, that of your days, and a wider perception of life. The part of you that awakens keeps your activities, but carries them out differently. The group of people rising up reminds you that there is no purely personal liberation: everyone is part of humanity and counts in its development. Family, group and community can then matter, with attention to everyone's needs, and sometimes the card indicates that you speak to a large audience or champion a cause. It also evokes the revival of something old and the search, in each generation, for an awareness and a voice of its own.

Your strengths

  • You are able to take stock, take responsibility for your past and free yourself from repeated patterns.
  • You can judge well by using all your faculties in a mature, integrated way.
  • You are sensitive to the needs and expectations of a group.

What holds you back

  • You may find good reasons not to change: lack of money, lack of preparation, responsibilities. These are excuses, because the reality of your life has already changed.
  • You may fear the unknown that this change opens up.
  • You may get too enthusiastic, overexcited and lack balance.
  • You may focus on yourself, within the narrowness of your individual life, and stay cut off from a wider life.

What helps

  • Recognizing that you have already changed: the old situations and the old you are already behind you.
  • Taking inventory of your life, reassessing your direction and repairing what can be repaired.
  • Sorting out what deserves to last, what must be purified and what can be saved.
  • Keeping your activities while carrying them out differently.

Work

You may have to give or receive criticism or validate a project, speak in front of groups, promote a cause. The card goes with preaching, teaching a conviction and propaganda, as well as with reputation and fame. It is linked to an intellectual recognition that exerts a good influence.

Family

Family, group and community matter, with cooperation and attention to everyone. What your parents built comes to you as an inheritance, from the side of reason (the father) and the side of the heart (the mother).

Judgement reversed

Reversed Judgement is about difficult transitions and resistance to transformation. You are facing a change that calls you, and you refuse to answer it, most often out of fear of the unknown. You may also want to answer the call without knowing what to do. You may have real reasons not to follow the proposed change: lack of money, lack of preparation, responsibilities. Yet all these objections are excuses, and when the card is reversed they take over. The reality of your life has changed, and the only choice left is to follow.

You may abandon a cause or flee a situation that threatens the comfort and security of the old ways, the old means or what you own. You may resent the change, avoid deciding or need time to adapt. If you cling to what exists, there can be stagnation and decline. You may refuse to hear a call or reject new technologies. Conversely, you may commit too quickly to something.

Delays and confusion can come from a missed opportunity or an important communication that does not get through. You may have missed important news or information. You may feel left out of an invitation. Groups of people may feel like strangers to one another. You may be unhappy with a court decision.

You can be too critical of yourself, too focused on analyzing yourself, or too harsh in your judgments of others. You may also find other people's criticism too hard, spiteful or full of prejudice, which can hold back what you create. You lack perspective and an overview, which leads to poor judgments and poor decisions. You doubt, rightly or not, the value of the change, the validity of your inner voice or the promises of those in charge. You may be afraid of aging and dying.

You may project this onto others: you then see them as people who try to sway the crowd with their personality or propaganda, or on the contrary as docile followers.

The old meanings of the reversed card point the same way: results put off, delay, aversion, lack of courage, weakness, incapacity, simplicity, sentence, noise and agitation, disappointment, indecision, procrastination, stagnation, a feeling of being a stranger to others. Deliberation and decision are also found there.

What holds you back

  • You deny the call to change because you are afraid of the unknown.
  • You find reasons that seem rational but are excuses.
  • You resist, avoid deciding and cling to what you know, at the risk of stagnation.
  • You are too critical of yourself and too harsh in your judgments, or you take other people's criticism for spite.
  • You lack perspective, which damages your decisions.
  • You doubt your inner voice and the value of the change.
  • You miss important opportunities or information.

What helps

  • Recognizing that your objections are excuses and that the situation has already changed.
  • Covering your ears with your hands and saying aloud "I'm not listening, I refuse, you can't make me." At some point, you understand what you are really refusing to hear, and the energy that was blocked in this situation is freed, even though the situation sometimes resembles your real concern only distantly.
  • Acting out the scene of the reversed card and then of the upright card, and seeing what it takes to move from one to the other.
  • Following the unpleasant emotion back to the earliest memory you can, seeing how you still react today to that past scene, and showing compassion to the younger girl you were.
  • Keeping in mind that turning the card upright is not the only option: you can also watch how this energy unfolds.

What the card shows

The image

An angel emerges from a ring of clouds and sounds a trumpet. A banner with a cross hangs from the trumpet. Below, figures rise from their tombs: a woman, a man and, between them, a child with its back to us. In some decks, three more figures, facing us, are added to the first three. All express wonder and fervor. Some decks also show mountains in the background.

What the scene represents

The card comes from the Christian image of the Last Judgment: the angel summons the dead. It is also read as an inner event: what was buried in you is called back to consciousness. The card speaks of a call more than of a condemnation: judgment is consciousness awakened before its own history. It shows the completion of a transformation, in response to a call that is heard from within. It is also the call to a fuller existence, coming at once from within and from outside. The name of the card says that something has come to its end and that a decision is made.

What the details say

  • The angel and his trumpet: the voice from above wakes what was asleep. His green wings stand for the life of the spirit, his blue tunic for the celestial ideal, his red arms for action. The solar sign on his forehead stands for discernment.
  • The cross on the banner: it joins what was separate, the ordinary time of days (the horizontal line) and eternity (the vertical line). It also marks a crossroads where a decision for great change arises. The person does not leave her usual activities, she carries them out differently.
  • The dead rising: death is not put forward, resurrection is.
  • The family group (father, mother, child): the father and mother face their child, and the two poles joined give a new reality, both born of the parents and entirely new. In the Tarot de Marseille, the father stands for reason and the wisdom of the past, the mother for the heart and religious feeling. The son gathers both inheritances.
  • The child seen from behind: the new existence remains a mystery, and you do not really know yourself until you have heard and followed the call.
  • The additional figures: no one frees herself alone. Each person is part of humanity, and the liberation of one changes the others.
  • The mountains: the truth that goes beyond ordinary knowledge.
  • The tombs: the past that does not fade. Deep memory keeps everything that was lived, thought or willed, and returns at the hour of truth.

What the card says about itself

Judgement is the awakening of memory, of consciousness and of deep vocation. Called back to life, you are called back to the truth: what was confused or covered over by habit becomes visible again. This bringing to light discerns without destroying at random: it shows what deserves to last, what must be purified and what can be saved. Spirit, soul and body regain their unity. Like Justice, the card asks you to make peace with your past. It marks a new awareness more than a simple change of circumstances. In a spread, it signals an inner push toward an important change, small or large depending on the other cards. What matters is the call. You have already changed; what remains is to recognize it. It evokes a jolt of awareness, a review of your life, responsibility for your past actions, and sometimes the feeling of finding your calling. It also speaks of cooperation in a family or group, concern for all beings and the voice of their own that each generation seeks.

Traditional meanings

Renewal, awakening, result, decision, repentance, mission, renown. It also says the call of the being to a higher state, the wish to rise above the material plane, and a favorable intellectual reputation. It also stands for reputation and fame, with a risk of lack of measure and excessive exaltation. The divinatory meanings cited are also change of position, renewal and outcome.

Correspondences

The Hebrew letter is Shin, tied to the fire of the spirit. In the other order of letters, the card carries Resh, "head," which stands for the mind awakened by the call. It corresponds to the constellation of the Swan, associated with the resurrection of spring. In a modern version of the tarot, the card is replaced by the Aeon, where the image of the angel and the tombs disappears.

Your strengths

You can take an honest look at your life and take responsibility for it. You are sensitive to the needs of others and attentive to your group or family.

What holds you back

  • You refuse the call out of fear of the unknown.
  • You find good reasons not to change: lack of money, lack of preparation, responsibilities. These are excuses, and you stay still.
  • You want to answer but you do not know how.
  • You let yourself be shut into your individual life and you do not take part in the wider life.

What helps

Recognize that you have already changed and follow the call. Wake up and step out of your life turned in on itself to take part in something wider. Take stock of your life and review your direction.
