Two of Pentacles upright

The Two of Pentacles speaks of change and balance between two poles. This card has long been called the Lord of Harmonious Change. In your situation, it shows that you alternate between gain and loss, strength and weakness, and that this alternation is part of how you function. On the card, two coins are linked by a cord in the shape of an eight, the sign of infinity: they turn together and hold each other in balance.

You may be running several things at once: two jobs, several relationships, several ventures, or an alternation between work and relaxation. You want to keep all your choices open and enjoy everything at once. This takes skill and responsiveness so that everything holds together at the same time. The Two of Pentacles also speaks of money: your earnings may double, but they only benefit you if they circulate, and they vary with the market. It is linked to trade and the exchange of goods or services.

This card also speaks of pleasure and gaiety. You have the right to enjoy life and have a good time: it is lighter than a great feast. Pleasure and fun can teach you a lot, provided you pay attention to them. Your situation may also include news or written messages. According to the old tradition, the card announces a pleasant change and visits to friends.

What holds you back

  • You are inconstant and hesitant, you do not stay in a fixed situation and you tire of it.
  • You swing from enthusiasm to melancholy.
  • You are hardworking but not very reliable, and sometimes scatterbrained for no reason.
  • You alternate between talking a lot and being wary.
  • You tend to argue.
  • You focus on the process more than on the result.
  • You may meet obstacles, agitation, embarrassment, worry or confusion, sometimes in money matters.
  • By wanting to have everything, you may find yourself in an exhausting loop.
  • You find it hard to launch into new projects.

What helps

Enjoying the road rather than worrying about the arrival: playing, relaxing, exercising, taking a vacation. Making your money circulate instead of keeping it still. Paying attention to pleasure, because it teaches you something.

Two of Pentacles reversed

Upright, the Two of Pentacles speaks of juggling several things at once, such as two jobs, two relationships or two businesses, keeping things moving and adapting to change. Reversed, it speaks of an overload of paperwork and information. You may be caught up in forms, documents and emails, with more data than you can process. You may be trying to avoid information overload, or facing a computer breakdown. You may also have to judge data that contradict each other, such as stock market indicators or polls.

Dubious advice or a bet on the stock market can pull you into ups and downs, and others can influence you too easily. You may already have changed your point of view, but it does not yet show from the outside.

This reversed card also touches communication and writing: mail, messages, texts, corporate communications, sending a manuscript or a file, a memo circulating in an office. You may do promotion or advertising. You are then paid for speed and quantity, as in journalism or commissioned work.

In extreme cases, money or information problems slip out of your control. You then act frantically while behaving as if everything were fine. Your energy fluctuates, you feel as if you are on a treadmill, the game becomes tedious and the jokes wear thin. You may pretend to enjoy life and other people: it gives you the feeling of functioning well, while you remain cut off from the people around you. When you project this state onto others, you see them as frivolous, hesitant, scattered and never finishing anything.

Your strengths

You know how to adapt to change and hold several things at once. You manage with prudence, which works for you.

What holds you back

  • You are buried under documents, emails and data.
  • You find it hard to decide between contradictory pieces of information.
  • You let others influence you too easily.
  • You scatter yourself, and your energy goes up and down.
  • You act as if everything were fine when the situation is slipping away from you.
  • You are at times enthusiastic, at times melancholy, hardworking but unreliable, hesitant and sometimes inconsistent.

What helps

Keeping time for play, relaxation, exercise and vacations. Recognizing that you have changed your point of view, even if others do not see it yet.

Careers

journalism, paid work on commission, promotion and advertising, corporate communications.

What the card shows

In the classic version of the card, you see a juggler. He holds his emblem in a loop or ribbon shaped like an infinity sign, the same sign that appears above the head of the Magician and of the woman in Strength. The image shows the very notion of balance: keeping several things in the air at once. Ships also appear in this version. They illustrate the idea of travel and, especially when the card speaks of business, the idea of holding course on a rough sea.

In the esoteric versions, the card shows two discs like the one on the Ace. A green and gold serpent winds around them in a figure eight and bites its own tail. A luminous hand, that of an angel, holds the center of the whole. This version has no roses. Above and below are the symbols of Jupiter and Capricorn. The figure is a rotating symbol. In another version, the two discs are placed one above the other. They are two Chinese symbols of yang and yin, one turning in one direction and the other in the opposite direction. They show the harmonious interplay of the four elements in constant motion. In the top disc are fire and water, in the bottom one air and earth. The green serpent, tail in mouth, draws the figure eight, symbol of infinity.

The card speaks of choice. You want to have everything at once, and it takes agility to carry two jobs, two relationships or two businesses at the same time, or to alternate work and relaxation. It also speaks of the pleasure of living: it is a dance more than a feast, lighter than the Nine of Cups. Ordinary pleasures hold a part of hidden magic. Pleasure and amusement can teach you a great deal if you pay attention. It invites you to enjoy the journey rather than worry about arriving, and recommends play, gaiety, movement, often a vacation.

Your strengths

  • You adapt easily to change.
  • You keep several things in balance at once.
  • You enjoy life with a light touch.
  • You succeed through prudence in how you manage things.

What holds you back

  • You focus on the process more than the result.
  • You find it hard to launch new projects, and you sometimes feel muddled or tangled in obstacles.
  • You can be unstable, sometimes playful, sometimes melancholy, hardworking but unreliable.
  • You hesitate and lack constancy.
  • You may find yourself caught in an exhausting loop.
  • When a problem bothers you, you may pretend to take everything lightly, with yourself as with others, and the juggling eventually fails.

What helps

  • Alternating work and play.
  • Staying attentive to pleasure and amusement, which teach something.

Work

The card can evoke several jobs or several businesses run at the same time, and contracts or commercial exchanges.

Money

The card points to trade and market fluctuations: money earns money only if it keeps circulating.
