Eight of Pentacles upright

This card is about work and learning a trade. It shows that you are at work, applying yourself to what you do, and that your craft, your job or a commission is central right now. It can also say you are still in the preparation phase of that work. After the harvest of the previous card, you move on to execution: meeting targets, filling orders, checking quality, perfecting a technique. You may also be preparing for lean periods or for retirement, and prudence is then the main theme.

What counts here is precision, punctuality and detail. The card also concerns study and research, learning and degrees. You progress step by step, with perseverance, diligence and daily follow-through: repeating tasks, tracking progress, training. It can also describe looking after your home, improving your living space, or building up supplies and protecting what you have invested.

Work succeeds only if you are interested in the work itself and not only in the result: someone who thinks only of glory or money does not get there. Here the apprentice is absorbed in the task. The card shows the training that gives both discipline and skill. Your work also gains meaning when it serves others: this is why a town is visible in the distance, linked to the workshop by a road.

It is described as an intelligence applied with love to material matters, those of the farmer, the craftsman and the engineer. It carries the name Prudence. Its prudence consists of calculating, sowing, then waiting for the harvest.

Your strengths

You have a sense of craft: skill, know-how and competence in your work. You are diligent, serious and industrious. You are prudent, you plan ahead and you set money aside for hard times. You are persevering and you move forward one step at a time. You love work for its own sake.

What holds you back

  • You can pay too much attention to small things at the expense of big ones: you are "penny wise and pound foolish."
  • You can be tight-fisted, hoard your money and lack a spirit of enterprise.
  • You can earn small sums without seeing further.
  • You may find repetition tedious: even a new skill turns into routine, and only daily upkeep is left.
  • You calculate a great deal, which takes the nobility out of your approach.

What helps

Keeping at what you are doing: results will come with time. Taking an interest in your work for its own sake rather than in the success it promises. Connecting your work to the people who need it. Streamlining and making your output more efficient. Looking after your health: eating well, exercising and protecting yourself from the sun.

Work

You are in a job or a commission that calls for skill and precision, and you apply yourself to it step by step. You are learning a trade, with the discipline and skill that come with it.

Money

You put money aside for bad days and manage your supplies and investments prudently. You can also earn small sums, at the risk of lacking breadth.

Body and energy

You take care of yourself: eating healthily, counting calories, exercising and protecting yourself from the sun.

Eight of Pentacles reversed

The upright card is about careful work, precision, patience and caution. Reversed, it touches your relationship to work and effort. You may be tired of working, work too much, or feel stuck in a dead-end job. You may want to change jobs or careers, or to build new work habits. It is also possible that you are not trained for the work you would like to do.

Where the upright card shows caution, the reversed card shows recklessness and haste. Boring, repetitive tasks end up wearing you down, and the work turns sloppy: you cut corners. You may lack concentration. In the traditional reading, vanity, the desire for money and a lack of ambition lead to meaningless occupations. You may also be idle or out of work, in a period when jobs are scarce.

In your dealings with others, the card speaks of flattery, hypocrisy and scheming to get ahead. It can point to schemes in which someone convinces others to invest, whether that is you or another person. Work you have commissioned may not get done, or may run into problems. Bills can weigh heavily, and your credit card may be getting a lot of use. If you project this card onto others, you may see them as too hardworking or too frivolous, the ant or the grasshopper.

On the inner work side, you may be in therapy, going back over old patterns, or keeping a journal every day. You may also keep a tally of compliments, slights and victories. You may take yourself too seriously.

What holds you back

  • You are tired from work or you work too much.
  • You feel stuck in a job with no future.
  • You lack the training for what you want to do.
  • You come across as reckless and rushed.
  • You can turn sloppy when your work becomes monotonous.
  • You may use flattery to get ahead.
  • You take yourself too seriously.

What helps

Taking a break when you are worn out. Changing jobs, careers or work habits if yours no longer suit you. Looking at your old patterns, for example with therapy or a journal.

Money

Your income may be short and short-lived. Bills can weigh heavily and your credit card may be getting a lot of use. The desire for money can lead you to meaningless occupations.

What the card shows

In the classic version of the card, you see a craftsman cutting stone and displaying his work as trophies. He is an apprentice, absorbed in his task. He embodies the training that gives both discipline and skill. The card concerns work, whether physical, artistic or spiritual.

Work does not succeed if you think only of the end result: you have to take an interest in the work itself. Behind the workshop, but far off, you see a town, with a yellow road that leads to the workshop and back. The town says that your work loses its meaning if it does not serve the community, even when you follow your own criteria and your own development. The yellow road stands for mental action.

In the version of the card drawn in the Golden Dawn spirit, a hand comes out of a cloud and holds a rose branch bearing four white roses. The roses touch only the four lower Pentacles, and plain leaves touch the four upper ones. The eight Pentacles are arranged in the geomancy figure called Populus, stable and peaceful. They can be read as the flowers or fruits of a great tree rooted in fertile soil.

This version associates the card with the Sun in Virgo, and with the number eight, which corresponds to Mercury. Mercury rules Virgo and is at its best there. The card bears the title Prudence. It indicates intelligence applied with love to material affairs, those of the farmer, the craftsman and the engineer. It is also the card of the man of the land, who sows and then waits for the harvest. It calls for calculating, setting aside for later and being patient. Its interest is that of ordinary people.

In a reading, this card says that you are in a period of work and learning, and that you should continue what you are doing: it will take time, then it will give good results. It also means work, a job, an order, know-how in a trade or in business, sometimes at the stage of preparation.

Your strengths

You apply your intelligence with care to concrete things.

What holds you back

  • You can pay too much attention to small things at the expense of large ones.
  • You can be tight-fisted, calculating and miserly, and lack entrepreneurial spirit.
  • If you think only of success and not of the work that leads to it, you become impatient, frustrated, envious or jealous.
  • Work without skill, involvement or pride leaves you dissatisfied.
  • You may also be guided by vanity, empty ambition, greed, or turn your ingenuity toward cunning and intrigue.

What helps

Keeping your taste for the work itself, without aiming only at the result. Connecting your work to those it serves. Setting money aside for later and being patient.
