Nine of Pentacles upright
The Nine of Pentacles shows the result of what you have built. You are secure, you have won material rewards and you enjoy leisure time. The card speaks of prosperity, comfort and material well-being, and it favors physical well-being and satisfaction. It gives weight to land and property. Its main meanings are prudence, security, success, accomplishment, certainty and discernment.
The success this card speaks of is not limited to material advantages. You know what matters in your life and which goals deserve the best of your effort. You are sure you made the right choices and followed them with action. Your success consists of building yourself with what your life has given you. This certainty goes further than noticing afterward that you did well: you know where others can only guess.
This success was achieved alone. To get what you have, you gave up the usual company, and the card asks for self-reliance and a certain solitude in pursuing your goals. It does not advise giving up a relationship, though. You have also given up spontaneity, wandering and recklessness. At first glance the card means success, but its deepest meaning is discipline: your intelligence and imagination are directed by your conscious will. You have an innate sense of order and discipline.
On the material level, the card announces good fortune, favor and popularity, with a mix of luck and good management. You reap what you sowed and you are satisfied with it. You may be very pleased to see this card when the question is a material one: the gain is substantial. It points to the full realization of material gain, property and riches.
Your strengths
You are disciplined and you have a sense of order. You know how to be self-sufficient.
What holds you back
- You feel comfort and the wish to be free as two opposing forces, and you can feel shut in by what you have built.
- You live with a certain solitude, and you gave up spontaneity, wandering and recklessness. If this sacrifice feels too heavy, it is because you do not give enough value to what your personal development brings you.
- You grow heavier and heavier and end up believing everything is for the best.
- You count your gains without asking what they are worth, and you are barely touched by the worries that occupy other people.
- In unfavorable cases, you are greedy, you cling too tightly to your possessions, and you can be dishonest.
What helps
- Keeping in mind what truly matters to you and recognizing the value of what your personal development brings you.
- Directing your imagination with method: disciplined creative energy becomes stronger and freer.
Nine of Pentacles reversed
The reversed Nine of Pentacles sharpens the feeling of being shut in and the wish for freedom. You may be resisting the pull of luxury and a sheltered life. Prosperity is still there, but its values seem false to you or hide an unease. Perhaps not everything is well in your surroundings. You are bored, or curious about other ways of living, with a wish to leave. It is also possible that someone is taking advantage of you: others see you as easy prey. Your peace and security may be threatened, from within as well as from outside. You may be the victim of a deception, or have gained something through one of your own. If you are buying property, examine the situation carefully.
Some people deny their own well-being or good luck. Or, the other way around, prosperity may seem just out of reach to you. You find it hard to relax, even when you have earned it, and you may have no time for vacations or leisure. You may also be wholly focused on your own pleasure, convinced that everything is owed to you. You may see others as people who have it all, because they were born into comfort or because they acted dishonestly or abusively. You may also think they covet what you own. On the inner level, you probably feel peace and serenity.
The upright card is about discipline. Reversed, that quality is denied or turned around: lack of discipline leads to failure, you abandon projects after starting them, and you cannot direct your drive toward useful goals. You may not know what you want or what really matters to you. This lack of self-awareness leads to irresponsibility and disloyalty, toward others as well as toward yourself. On the upright card, the woman has given up company, spontaneity and wandering in order to build her life. If this sacrifice seems too heavy to you, perhaps you do not give enough value to what developing yourself brings you. The traditional meanings of the reversed card are disappointment, empty promises, projects that come to nothing, guilt, excess pleasure and superficial rather than real gains.
What holds you back
- You feel cramped in your security and want to leave.
- You let yourself be exploited or deceived, or you deceive yourself.
- You cannot rest on what you have earned, or on the contrary you think everything is owed to you.
- You start projects and abandon them.
- You do not always know what matters to you.
What helps
Reviewing a situation carefully before buying property. Recognizing the value of what developing yourself brings you.
What the card shows
The image
A woman stands alone in her garden. Her hand rests on pentacles and her thumb catches on a vine. She is elegantly dressed, the grapes are ripe and a falcon is ready. The pentacles grow on the bushes: they stand for a productive, living life. Her dress is decorated with symbols of Venus, and yet she is alone.
The falcon
The falcon is a hunting bird that stands for the intellect, the imagination and the mind. Its hood makes it submit to its mistress, that is, to the conscious will. A bird usually stands for spirit and freedom, but this one is a hooded predator.
The garden, the dress, the glove, the snail
Signs of enclosure are everywhere: the ample dress, the walled garden, the glove, the hood. They are both a protection and a trap. The snail in the foreground carries its shell cautiously, but it is also a small creature that damages gardens. The card sets comfort and refinement on one side against a hidden, rapacious instinct and a wish to be free on the other.
What the image means
The Nines show compromises and choices, and this card is an example: the woman alone in her garden has given up ordinary company to get what she has. She has also given up spontaneity, wandering and recklessness. In a spread, this calls for self-reliance and a certain solitude in the service of your goals, without requiring you to break off a relationship. If the sacrifice seems too heavy, perhaps you are not giving enough value to what the work on yourself brings you.
Unlike the woman in the Ten, this one has a clear awareness of the good things in her life. The card speaks of self-awareness: knowing how to tell what matters and which goals deserve your best efforts. It is about building yourself with what your circumstances have given you. This certainty goes as far as knowing where others only guess.
At first glance, the card speaks of success. Looked at more closely, its main meaning becomes discipline, the kind that does not handicap but lifts.
The classic meaning
The card is the fruit of the previous cards and promises prosperity and ease: you are safe, you have earned material rewards and you enjoy moments of rest. The grapes, the falcon and the dress stand for luxuries, pleasures and leisure. Nine is also the number of the Hermit: you may cultivate solitary pleasures and look for your own fulfillment. Land and possessions matter here. The card indicates a natural sense of order and discipline. Its traditional words are discretion, circumspection, prudence, discernment, contentment and maturity.
The old texts
An angelic hand holds a rose branch with nine white roses, each touching a pentacle. The card is linked to Venus and Virgo. It says the complete realization of material gain, goods, riches and inheritance. It also says the wish to possess and keep your goods, and sometimes theft. It all depends on the strength of the card in the spread.
Your strengths
You have discipline and a sense of order. You have self-awareness, you tell what matters to you, and you have the certainty of having chosen and acted as you should. You are discreet, careful and clear-sighted. You know how to manage on your own.
What holds you back
- You have given up company, spontaneity and recklessness for your success, and this sacrifice can weigh on you.
- You feel both protected and shut in, and you may keep a wish for freedom beneath this security.
- You may covet and hoard your possessions.
- Once settled into satisfaction, you become more placid.
What helps
Looking at the image and letting it work on you helps you build discipline. You can use it as a goal when you want to develop your will and discipline. Cultivate solitary pleasures and your own fulfillment. See your discipline as a joy that moves you forward, not as a constraint.
