Page of Pentacles upright
The Page of Pentacles is the student or the apprentice. It represents the youthful traits of the Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn). The Pages show the quality of their suit in its simplest state: lived for its own sake, without outside pressure. It speaks of material work that secures your livelihood, and of unselfish work that brings wealth as its reward.
You are in a phase of study and application. You observe, you research, you think, you concentrate. You look at your subject with wonder, but with good sense too. You look for facts, gather data and observe a process or an experiment. You may take classes, think about careers, learn new skills, often on the job, or apply for a position. This card represents the concrete work of the student, study and scholarship, where the Page of Cups represents inspiration.
You look at your subject with total attention and care little about what goes on around you. You do not need to be in school: the card speaks of anyone who approaches an activity with fascination and commitment, and who cares less about rewards or social position than about the work itself. You believe something only when you can see and touch it. You are careful and realistic, loyal and steady.
In everyday life, you examine a purchase closely to judge its quality and workmanship. You may also collect objects. You take a risk only if it serves a practical goal and meets clear criteria. At times you feel a longing or a craving that goes unfulfilled.
The card also plays the role of messenger. It asks you to pay attention to tangible things: your body, your health, your possessions and practical matters. It may invite you to read business or financial mail, a contract, instructions or diagrams with care. It evokes gathering and passing on information. In another sense, it announces news and messages, along with the idea of rules and management. It also describes observant, studious or pragmatic children who are curious about nature. They often play alone and like taking objects apart and putting them back together to understand how they work.
In the form of the Princess of Disks, the card describes a person who is generous, kind, diligent, caring, careful, brave, persevering and compassionate. She has an expression of intense thought, as if about to discover something extraordinary. Her traits are very varied, and what shows in her depends on the influences she receives: she can therefore seem inconsistent.
Your strengths
You have practical sense and curiosity about nature.
What holds you back
- You can be so absorbed in your subject that you forget what is around you.
- You believe only what you see and touch.
- You can feel a longing or a craving that goes unfulfilled.
- Without your sense of serious work, you can slide into disorder and dissipation.
- When your qualities decay, you become wasteful and extravagant.
- Bad company can push you to gamble.
What helps
- Looking closely: checking quality and reading contracts and instructions carefully.
- Training and learning by doing.
- Paying attention to your body, your health and your practical affairs.
- Relaxing after a hard task, like a student after exams.
Page of Pentacles reversed
The Page of Pentacles is the student or apprentice of the earth: cautious, realistic, attached to what can be seen and touched. Reversed, it shows that you lose the thread of what is concrete. You lose concentration, apply yourself less and disconnect from what is practical. You find it hard to learn something new or to take in the information and facts you need. You lose patience and interest in something that is nonetheless useful or valuable, and you drop it. A project or an expectation may not materialize, for example a job lead that goes nowhere or that you turn down yourself. You may also change your mind about what you really wanted and no longer find it attractive. Sometimes this points to excessive criticism.
This position also speaks of your relationship to possessions. You may crave money and objects to the point that they hold you. You may form immature or anxious attachments to people you know. You find yourself with more objects and more matters in progress than you can manage. You may also turn away from matter toward the spiritual and the unseen: your inner sight then counts for more than your physical sight, with an interest in crystal-ball gazing or the Ouija board. You often keep these interests to yourself.
You may neglect your health and hygiene, and also fail to respect the nature around you, by littering or damaging your environment. Absorbed in the small details of daily life, you feel bogged down. Projected onto someone else, the card makes you find that person too materialistic or cut off from reality. It can also point to someone who meddles in other people's affairs.
What holds you back
- You lose your seriousness in study and work, and you drop what demands attention.
- You tire quickly of what has value and you change your mind about what you wanted.
- You criticize too much.
- You cling to money and possessions, or anxiously to people.
- You accumulate more things and commitments than you can handle.
- You neglect your body, your hygiene and your surroundings.
- You drown in the details of daily life.
What helps
- Letting go of the small daily obsessions, which opens another way of perceiving things.
- Keeping the curiosity and openness of the apprentice, and persevering even when you cannot yet see the value of what you have found.
What the card shows
He walks slowly and notices nothing around him. He stands for the student, absorbed in his studies, fascinated, and little concerned with what goes on outside them. He embodies the student's practical work: study and knowledge earned through effort, where the Page of Cups embodies inspiration.
The student here is a symbol. The card does not necessarily point to someone in school. It points to anyone who approaches an activity with fascination and commitment, and who cares less about rewards or social position than about the work itself. The Page is the opposite of the Knight: the two share the two qualities of Pentacles, practical sense and magic. The Knight without his job grows discouraged and inert; the Page without his sense of work slides into dissipation and waste. The card can also simply indicate relaxation after a hard task, like a student catching her breath after exams.
She wears a sheepskin mantle, with a scepter ending in a circle in one hand and a pentacle in the other. Her form recalls Hebe, Ceres and Proserpine.
Because she is the lowest point of the whole set, the Princess contains the potential of every possibility in the four suits. She is femininity at its most complete and holds every trait of a woman: what shows depends on the influences she receives. She can therefore seem bewilderingly inconsistent, like a lottery in which every draw has the same odds whatever the last one was. On the magical level, the card is the apprentice, or the youngest child of the fairy tales who finds an object without knowing its true value and keeps at it, staying open and full of wonder.
