Ace of Pentacles upright
Upright, this card shows you a material base beginning: an opportunity for prosperity, comfort, pleasure and security, with the joy and satisfaction that go with them. It says complete contentment and simple happiness, a material ease that you may experience as an accomplishment. It is the card of physical well-being and concrete abundance: you reap the result of your work and enjoy it. It speaks of earth giving up its riches: nature, money, security, a joyful life. It can also point to what comes to you without your having earned it directly, such as an inheritance or a gift. The sheltered garden in the image shows that civilized life, when it works, offers you shelter and a safe, comfortable environment. This card invites you to see what is precious in the ordinary things of your practical life. Taken alone, it says nothing precise: its effect is read according to the cards around it.
Your strengths
You have concrete resources to lean on: your health, your possessions and your practical skills. You know how to appreciate what you have and savor the results of your efforts. You are able to open to the truth when you are ready, starting from ordinary things.
What holds you back
- You can use your comfort to stay sheltered, close to home, instead of exploring the unknown.
- You can stop at material comfort and move away from the more demanding spiritual path.
- You risk abusing what you receive: material gifts lend themselves to it more than others do.
What helps
Respecting and valuing your concrete resources: your health, your possessions, your practical know-how. Accepting the opportunity that comes, and accepting the responsibilities it brings too. Keeping in mind that the garden gate opens toward somewhere further, and that comfort must not keep you from going toward what takes more effort.
Work
This card indicates a work or project opportunity, in which what you get comes with responsibilities.
Ace of Pentacles reversed
Reversed, it keeps this abundance and does not take it away: the wealth is still there, and may even be exaggerated.
You may be so focused on material gain that everything ends up being judged by its value and price. You may also be so afraid of running short that you hold on to what you have: you refuse to share, you do few favors, you become stingy. The more you fear losing, the more your choices shrink. Keeping resources to yourself in this way leads to using them badly and to less money circulating. Your relationship to wealth can corrupt you: selfishness, excessive competition, distrust and too strong a dependence on comfort and security. Prosperity can also exist without making you happy.
When an opportunity comes, you may distrust it: you judge it too good to be true, or you suspect it will impose limits you do not accept.
The card also speaks of protection. The garden of the Ace of Pentacles represents the shelter that events or other people give you against life's difficulties. Reversed, it indicates that this shelter is ending and you now have to face your problems yourself. Or it indicates that you are clinging to this shelter when the time to leave it has come. It can be a refusal to grow up, in particular to become independent of your parents. In another sense, the reversed card can say that you have understood it is time to leave what is familiar and move toward broader knowledge.
What holds you back
- You judge everything by its market value and price.
- You are afraid of running short, you hold on to what you have, you refuse to share.
- You become stingy or self-interested, you hold too tightly to security and comfort.
- You distrust an opportunity that seems too good or that would limit you.
- You stay in a routine where you are no longer moving forward.
- You cling to a shelter, to parents or to a comfort it would be time to leave.
What helps
- Taking things more lightly and being less attached to money.
- Seeing whether the shelter that still protects you is serving you, or whether it is time to face your problems yourself.
- Asking yourself whether it is time to leave what is familiar and go further.
Money
You may hold on to your money for fear of running short, and this stinginess makes less resource circulate. Payment delays may come up, or difficulty getting what you are owed. You may also detach from money by telling yourself it is only money.
Work
You may turn down an offer that seems too good to be true or too restrictive. You may also run into delays linked to the availability of work.
What the card shows
A hand comes out of a cloud holding a large pentacle. The pentacle is made of five concentric circles. The center circle is white and bears a red Greek cross. Twelve white rays run from this center to the edge, which gives the whole the look of an astrology chart. The pentacle is topped with a small circle, then a large white Maltese cross fitted with two wings. The hand holds a rose branch, on which you can see four crosses and two buds. In the Waite-Smith deck version, the hand gives its gift in a garden, a place sheltered from the wild nature seen beyond.
The pentacle stands for matter in all its aspects, good and bad: material gain, work, power, wealth. The card speaks of contentment, happiness, prosperity and comfortable material conditions. It holds the seeds of prosperity, comfort, pleasure and security, with the joy and satisfaction that go with their growth. It is associated with the start of a fortune, inheritance, gifts and saving.
It is the gift of the earth: nature, wealth, security, a joyful life. On this Ace only, no Yod falls from the sky, because the earth, in its solid and complete reality, carries its own magic. This magic often escapes us because we find its products ordinary. The garden shows that civilization, when it works well, offers us basic protection: human labor shapes the raw matter of nature into a safe and comfortable environment.
The Pentacles are the fruits of your work and the result of what you have done in other areas: you reap what you have sown and enjoy what your efforts have produced. The card asks you to respect and value your concrete resources: your health, your possessions and your practical skills.
The image also holds an invitation to go further. The garden gate opens toward the mountain, which stands for spiritual aspiration. Material comfort can keep you sheltered close to home, far from the unknown and from more demanding spiritual rewards. Each of the two choices brings its own form of gold. The spiritual work is to recognize the magic in ordinary things, in nature as in civilization, and then to go beyond to the knowledge the mountains symbolize. When you are ready, the gate always opens toward truth.
Your strengths
You respect your concrete resources: your health, your possessions, your practical skills.
What holds you back
- You risk staying in the security and comfort of what you know, instead of exploring the unknown.
- Accepting what life offers you brings rewards, but also responsibilities.
- Material gifts are easier to misuse than other kinds: they can feed selfishness, competition, distrust and too great a dependence on security and comfort.
- You may rest on the protection of others or of circumstances and stay in that shelter after the time to leave it.
What helps
- Respecting and valuing your concrete resources.
Work
The card is associated with a job or a project that offers good prospects, such as a raise or a promotion, with the responsibilities that go with it.
