Three of Wands upright
The Three of Wands is the card of established strength. It speaks of enterprise, effort, initiative and discovery. After the previous card, where a decision had to be made, things get moving here. You have the strength, confidence and boldness to launch ventures, sometimes by bringing together several people or several elements.
This card says something has been accomplished: you have succeeded at something, especially in work and career, and this success comes with emotional maturity. Your wish for action is still there, but you are solid and no longer threatened. You can keep a stable base in what you have already accomplished while opening new areas and new interests within you. In a relationship, this can mean you keep your main commitment while looking for new encounters.
You are in a position of authority: you command, supervise and direct. Once the venture is launched, you can wait for it to bear fruit. Because projects take time, you make long-term plans and try to keep the big picture. The field is commerce, negotiation, business abroad and travel, and you may have to manage your activity from a distance. This card also announces useful cooperation in business: someone established in their field is looking at you with the intention of helping you.
It also asks you to move toward the unknown: it is the first card of passage in the series, the one that explores what is unfamiliar, what belongs to fire. For a person troubled by the past, it indicates that she can make peace with her memories.
The Three of Wands is associated with the Sun in Aries, at the start of spring, and its meaning is harmonious. The initial idea is fertilized and takes on a stability that can no longer be undone. In a spread, it is a card of departure and search that is still feeling its way forward, and its meaning depends a great deal on the neighboring cards.

Three of Wands reversed
You have trouble putting your plans into action, or you are going through a creative block. You may feel overwhelmed, as if you had taken on more than you can carry, and the tasks seem crushing. You may also find yourself in the middle of your dreams, hopes and wishes without knowing where to start, or out of fear of taking risks, and they do not take off. Trouble also comes from excessive ambition, arrogance or stubbornness, followed by worry about whether you will get anything out of it. You hesitate to ask for help out of distrust and fear of being deceived, and you feel cut off from others and isolated. You may feel ignored or left out of the flow of information. You sometimes carry expectations and assumptions you are not aware of, and they cause problems when someone fails to meet them or does what they should not. You may also turn away from the future to focus on the past, from genealogical research to memories of past lives. Memories that disturb you may also resurface. When you project this onto others, you see them neglecting the everyday, dreaming or thinking only about future possibilities. This card also says you are responsible for your actions and decisions, because their effects reach far into the future. The delays and setbacks it announces are generally temporary, and the situation can improve.
What holds you back
- You lack foresight and rush into hurried activity that ends in exhaustion.
- You dream of projects without knowing where to start, or you are afraid of taking risks.
- You are too ambitious, arrogant or obstinate, then worry about what it will bring in.
- You distrust other people's help for fear of being deceived, and you isolate yourself.
What helps
Focusing on practical, immediate details, step by step. Reorganizing a job into smaller tasks.
What the card shows
In the classic image, a calm, composed figure stands with his back to us at the edge of a cliff, watching ships pass on the sea. Three wands are planted in the ground, and he leans lightly on one of them. The ships are his: they carry his goods. They have already set out: after the choice made on the previous card, things have been set in motion.
The card speaks of established strength, enterprise, effort, trade and discovery. It also speaks of effective collaboration in business. You have the strength, confidence and daring to launch projects, sometimes by bringing together three people or three elements. You can lead, supervise and command activities from a position of authority. These projects often involve trade, business abroad or distant negotiations. Once the ships have sailed, you can wait for their return. Because great sea expeditions paid off long after departure, the card evokes long-term plans and a need for an overall view.
The sea and the cliff have their own meanings. The sea has always evoked the immensity and mystery of the universe, and rivers the experience of the self dissolving into that immensity. The ships stand for the part of you that explores deep experience. The man standing on the land shows that you first need to take root in ordinary reality before setting out to explore. This is the first of the "door" cards of the Wands: it opens onto the unknown, and this search for the unknown belongs to Fire. The meaning lives above all in the experience of sinking into the image until the ships carry you to zones of yourself you do not know.
The card can also show that you look at your past from a distance, from a success already achieved. The ships setting out toward unknown waters say that you do not yet know what shape the rest of your life will take.
Your strengths
You have confidence, daring and initiative. You have a sense for trade and a dynamic mind. You know how to cooperate productively. You know how to set far-off goals and see the whole.
What holds you back
- You can be bold to the point of recklessness and rashness.
- You may neglect small immediate details because you are looking at the whole.
- You can also show pride, arrogance, pretension and stubbornness.
- An exploration may fail because of problems bigger than expected.
- You may feel isolated, watching the world from afar.
- You may be troubled by memories.
What helps
- Ground yourself in ordinary reality before heading toward the unknown.
- Plan for your future needs.
- Get involved in your surroundings after a period of stepping back and reflecting.
