Ten of Wands upright

The Ten of Wands shows a person crushed by the weight of what she carries, above all her responsibilities. Its main meaning is oppression. Your situation mixes success with the burden of that success: a gain or an achievement has itself become a load. Your drive has thrown you into so many situations that this energy is now weighed down by commitments and problems. You would like to be free to travel, to look for adventure and new activities, but you find yourself caught in a pile of financial, family and work obligations that you created yourself. You did not plan it: it all built up around you little by little. One big starting idea has multiplied into too many projects, perhaps through overconfidence, and keeping them going has become heavy. The card speaks of information overload and exhaustion. It speaks of burdens, duties, obligations and the need to do what is expected of you. You may feel betrayed by your own ambitions, or full of resentment toward the people you serve. If you are weighed down by "the system," whether family, the state or work, these loads seem unfair and cruel, and you feel taxed, cluttered, trapped and under pressure. Your projects become obstacles you can no longer see past, and your enthusiasm fades under duty, which blocks your creativity.

In emotional relationships, the card shows the person who takes the whole weight of the bond on herself. When conflicts or dissatisfactions appear, you try to fix everything. You hold the relationship up by sheer strength, and the other person sometimes does not even realize what is going on. In practical matters as in emotional ones, you took these burdens on yourself and made the situation yourself. Other ways of doing things remain possible. These burdens are sometimes not entirely real, or could be avoided. They can serve as an excuse for not doing something truly constructive, such as leaving a bad situation.

The card also speaks of strength used alone, with no means other than force, which ends up becoming tyranny. It has done its work, and done it too well: it did not know when to stop. It is force cut off from its sources, grown blind, with nothing to moderate it. Ten is the extreme point of fire: the appearance is formidable, but ruin is already starting to grow. A will that understands nothing beyond its goal and its wish for results burns itself out in the fires it lit. This force is applied to material and selfish ends. It sometimes leads to failure, when the opposition becomes too strong to control, because of too much selfishness from the start. Another, shorter reading sees difficulties that do not come to anything, or only with great effort.

Your strengths

You are proud of your skills and your ability to help others, and you carry your tasks with perseverance, sometimes even with ease. When the card is lived well, it brings generosity, selflessness and a spirit of sacrifice. It can also mark the last stretch of a long effort that succeeds.

What holds you back

  • You keep everything to yourself, or you do not know how to delegate.
  • You take on too many projects and commitments without stopping.
  • You use your burdens as an excuse not to change a bad situation.
  • You feel betrayed by your own ambitions, or resentful toward the people you serve.
  • You lose your enthusiasm under duty.
  • Lived badly, the card brings ill will, frivolity, lying, slander, envy and stubbornness.
  • It also brings duplicity: pretense, disguise, treachery.

What helps

Recognize that you built this situation yourself and that other ways of doing things exist. Check whether all your burdens are real. Do not use them as an excuse to avoid a real change. Know how to stop when what you set out to get has been gotten.

Ten of Wands reversed

It can say you are putting down your burdens, coming out of an oppressive situation, delegating responsibilities. You move away from a difficulty, you find relief, you clear space for a new start. The relief can feel like a new life.

It can also say the opposite: the loads have multiplied to the point that you risk collapsing, physically or emotionally. You may also have thrown the weight off because it had become too heavy. From there, the situation splits in two. Either you use the freed energy to better purpose and take a new direction. Or you rebel against the responsibilities without doing anything constructive, and later pick up the same burden on the same road.

This card also speaks of how you carry your loads. Often, you took these burdens on yourself and built the situation yourself. Other ways of doing things still exist. The burdens are not always entirely real. They can serve as an excuse not to break with a bad situation.

Reversed, it can also show a burden you deny: you refuse to admit that a job is too heavy. When you are in an untenable position, you may feel despair. You may also avoid looking at the problem.

It can concern others. You may credit them with hypocrisy or judge them irresponsible and unreliable. You may also have trusted someone and ended up carrying the load alone. Tasks do not get done, obstacles make you feel unable to move forward, and your efforts, even very large ones, produce no result. It can signal the end of an ambition or a dream you had held for a long time.

Your strengths

You know how to put down a weight that no longer has a reason to be carried and step away from what is crushing you. You can turn the energy you spent carrying into a new direction.

What holds you back

  • You deny that your work is too heavy.
  • You avoid facing a problem.
  • You feel hopeless when your position seems to have no way out.
  • You rebel against your responsibilities without changing anything, then pick up the same burden again.
  • You use your loads as an excuse not to leave a bad situation.
  • You shift your faults onto others by judging them irresponsible and unreliable.

What helps

Looking at whether you pass the load on consciously or send it back to others. Looking at the other cards in the spread to understand the circumstances and other ways of going about it.

Home

This card can point to sorting through what clutters your home, and to a move or a departure abroad.

Family

It can indicate work on what comes to you from your family: letting go of family patterns that do not serve you.

What the card shows

It corresponds to Saturn in Sagittarius, and Sagittarius is at its most uncomfortable there: it is light, fast and bright, while Saturn is heavy, slow, stubborn and dark.

In the old model of the card, four hands come out of clouds, two on each side, and clasp at the center with the sign of recognition of the first degree. They hold eight wands crossed four against four. A fifth hand, at the bottom center, holds two more upright wands that pass through the point where the others meet. Flames burst out where the wands cross.

But they have lost their nobility: their ends look like claws, and they lack the authority and intelligence of the earlier cards. In front of them, the two symbols of heavenly power from the Two of Wands have become dark iron bars, like those of a prison. The flames in the background have grown larger: this is fire in its most destructive aspect. The whole gives an image of oppression and repression.

The number ten points to Malkhut, which depends on the nine other spheres without being in direct communication with them. Strength is therefore cut off from its spiritual sources: it becomes blind, and its energy takes its most violent form, with nothing to moderate it. Ten also marks the end point of materialization: the effect of fire is pushed to its limit, the whole looks formidable on the surface, but the seeds of its decay are already there.

The wand has won and done its work, but too well: it did not know how to stop, and authority has become tyranny. This is a will that understands nothing beyond its immediate goal and its wish for results, and that ends up consuming itself in the fires it has set. The tens are a warning: you have to see where the first false step leads.

The card shows a cruel and crushing strength and energy, used only for material and selfish ends. It can show the failure of a venture, with opposition too strong to be controlled, coming from excessive selfishness at the start. It also names ill will, lying, slander, envy and obstinacy. Well placed, it means the opposite: generosity, selflessness and self-giving.

In a modern reading, the tens move from the individual fulfillment of the nines to sharing the results with others, and this can bring both success and suffering. A single idea, that of the Ace, has multiplied into too many projects, perhaps from overconfidence, and the weight of keeping them going becomes crushing. The card speaks of burdens, responsibilities, obligations and the need to do what is expected of you. It can also mean the home stretch, the last painful steps of a long successful undertaking.

Your strengths

You carry your tasks with perseverance, sometimes with ease, and you are proud of your skills and your ability to help others.

What holds you back

  • You feel betrayed by your own ambitions, or full of resentment toward those you serve.
  • You have trouble delegating, or you keep everything to yourself.
  • You have too many projects, and they hide everything that lies beyond.
  • When an institution weighs on you, whether family, state or work, you find the burdens unfair and cruel, and you feel stuck and under pressure.
  • Under the weight of duty, enthusiasm disappears and creativity gets blocked.

What helps

  • Set down certain burdens, leave situations that crush you and delegate.
  • Check whether you are really entrusting a burden to someone or simply handing it back to them.
  • Look at whether you are telling the truth, because the reversed card warns against duplicity and betrayal.
  • Put the energy you carry to better use instead of merely rebelling against your responsibilities.
