Nine of Wands upright
It says you have reached a point where your work is done and where you now have to hold it. What came before it, the drive of the previous card, is complete: you are in a phase of reserve and waiting rather than haste. You expect difficulties, perhaps opposition, including from something not yet visible. You may protect and watch over what you have built, or set reserves aside for what must be defended. Your strength is that of a seasoned person: your training, your development and your discipline have given you moral and spiritual solidity. Your strength is also settled and stable: it isn't easily shaken. The card can also simply indicate a period of rest.

- You have discipline and experience, and you rely on them.
- You have prudence and discernment: you assess the situation carefully before acting.
- You have the strength of your purpose and the courage of your convictions, which helps you hold your line and defend what you have created.
- You are generous and curious, and you like asking questions.
- You generally succeed, even if it is at the cost of effort and tension.
- Your strength lies in your capacity to move and change: your defense is effective because it stays mobile.
What holds you back
- You are wary and easily suspect enemies, sometimes before there are any.
- You may delay, suspend or stop work, and fall into stagnation or lack of motivation.
- You keep to yourself, and your independence can isolate you.
- Because of past emotional wounds, you may hide behind defenses you built yourself.
- You may freeze into one way of seeing things and into old habits.
- You may choose a single possibility among many, at the expense of all the others.
- You can be headstrong and stubborn, and too attached to outward appearances.
- You are often afraid and anxious before you succeed.
What helps
- Adopting an attitude of watchful waiting rather than rushing.
- Paying attention to what you must protect, and taking stock of what is threatened.
- Relying on your experience, your discipline and your convictions to hold firm.
- Staying mobile: not stiffening up, changing position when needed.
Nine of Wands reversed
The upright card shows someone who has faced a great deal of opposition, from others and from life, and who defended themselves rather than endure it.
You are in a situation where the obstacles and difficulties of the upright card can become heavier. Loneliness and the feeling of being kept at a distance can also grow, until it resembles banishment. You feel shut in and you are looking for a way out. You may also be trying to overcome someone else's resistance.
Two outcomes are possible. The first: your defense gives way, because the obstacles and problems become too great for your strength. The second: you look for a different approach. The card does not always tell you to stop fighting: depending on the context, your vigilance and tension remain necessary.
You may have reached a dead end in your own progress, or be going through setbacks at work. You may also question your commitments, run from a responsibility, lack discipline, or be weary of waiting for something that never comes. You may also simply be out of service. With a little freedom, you can become impulsive and do something thoughtless.
You may carry a load that becomes an obstacle you did not choose. If you project this card onto others, you experience them as hostile, as if they were denying you entry somewhere. You may also put up a false front and deny your own distrust or hostility. You are then too defensive, or caught off guard. The card can also say you hold knowledge and experience that you do not share, or cannot share.
Your strengths
You can discern how to use your powers. You have developed strength and watchful eyes by fighting.
What holds you back
- You stay on the defensive and see only the enemy, sometimes even when the enemy has stopped fighting.
- You spend a great deal of energy staying tense and ready to fight.
- You feel isolated and despair of seeing things move forward.
- You put up a front that hides your distrust.
What helps
- Lowering your defenses and moving closer to others.
- Looking for a different approach.
- Looking at the context to see whether your vigilance is still needed, knowing that dropping your guard carries a risk.
- Reading the card together with the other cards in the spread to understand its meaning in your situation.
Work
You may be at a dead end or suffer career setbacks.
What the card shows
For Wands, fire means great strength, physical power and a quick mind.
The image shows someone who has faced a great deal of opposition, from others and from life. Instead of simply enduring it, he fought back. In fighting, he has developed his strength: the figure is muscular and sharp-eyed. Behind him stand the other wands. They represent his resources, or else his problems piling up behind him. In both cases, he is ready for the next fight. The wands have reached their goal and form something like a fortification.
This figure is not whole: through necessity or habit, he has closed himself off to everything that is not conflict. He looks only for the next fight, and his eyes see only the enemy, sometimes even when the enemy has already laid down arms.
In this same tarot, the wands have become arrows: eight are in the background, and in front of them stands a master arrow. This arrow has the Moon for its point and the Sun for the force that drives it, because the path of Sagittarius on the Tree of Life links the Sun to the Moon. Each of the eight arrows has a crescent moon for its point and eight moons for feathers. The flames on the card number ten, which shows that the energy is directed downward.
Your strengths
You have great strength of character: your training, schooling and discipline have given you moral and spiritual solidity. You have willpower and courage in your convictions, which helps you hold firm and defend what you have built. You are prudent and you assess carefully before acting. You have constancy, your strength lasts over time, and it is sometimes applied with method. You are also generous and curious, and you ask questions.
What holds you back
- You expect an attack, even when none is coming from anywhere visible.
- You are wary and expect difficulties.
- You set yourself apart, with an independence that can isolate you, and because of past emotional wounds, you may hide behind defenses you built yourself.
- Your outlook and your old habits can stiffen.
- You are sometimes stubborn and inflexible, and you attach importance to appearances.
- You fight out of habit and no longer see life outside conflict.
What helps
- Put forward your strength and determination rather than your rigidity.
- Take an attitude of waiting and observing in the face of haste.
- Rest, or suspend a piece of work for a while, when prudence calls for it.
- Keep a mobile defense rather than a fixed one.
- Look for another approach when your defense is no longer enough.
