Minor arcana · Wands

Four of Wands

The sentence to keep
What you built with effort is complete: it is time to rest, to celebrate with the people close to you, and to make it a solid foundation.

In short

Upright
The Four of Wands speaks of an arrival, a return, the completion of work. In your situation, a stage is finished: what you built with pain and effort now holds.
Reversed
The old reversed meaning stays close to the upright meaning: prosperity, increase, happiness, beauty, embellishment. It adds a nuance: incomplete happiness, a pleasure that lacks something, a faded beauty.

Four of Wands upright

The Four of Wands speaks of an arrival, a return, the completion of work. In your situation, a stage is finished: what you built with pain and effort now holds. You reap the fruit of your efforts and feel a solid success. It is the time of rest after work. This card marks an agreement, an arrangement, a settling in. What was promised by the previous cards takes shape and becomes concrete. What you have begun falls into order and rests on clear rules.

The card often evokes a celebration that marks the end of a period: engagement, wedding, graduation, reunion, family gathering, party, award ceremony. You may tighten personal ties, conclude alliances, reaffirm a commitment or go back to your family roots. You may also negotiate an agreement between opposing camps to restore harmony and balance. It can be a stay in the country or a vacation retreat, with relaxation, pleasure, good understanding and happiness. The card can also point to buying property or building a solid base for what comes next. When you are about to move on to a new experience, it invites you to pause and acknowledge everything you have received so far.

As for method, your work is established with tact and gentleness: nothing lasting is founded without those qualities. This success stays within a limited frame: you don't try to enlarge what you set out to build at the start.

Your strengths

You know how to build with order and solidity, within a stable frame. You are able to bring people together, gather them and encourage others before a new task.

What holds you back

  • You may be unready, unreliable and unsettled through worry and haste.
  • You can be gracious while sometimes lacking sincerity.
  • By wanting to keep the frame of what you have built, you limit what could grow, and that limit can prepare disorder.

What helps

Celebrating a completed stage and giving thanks for what you have received. Resting after the effort. Staying tactful and gentle in what you do. Looking for agreement between people who disagree. Giving yourself a solid base before you set off again.

Creativity

A work built with effort reaches its completion and you draw beauty from it.

Four of Wands reversed

The old reversed meaning stays close to the upright meaning: prosperity, increase, happiness, beauty, embellishment. It adds a nuance: incomplete happiness, a pleasure that lacks something, a faded beauty.

You may have forgotten to be grateful for what you have. Family reunions, alumni gatherings and banquets leave you ambivalent: you want to see everyone, but you dread the clashes and the social conventions. Your own insecurities and inhibitions can surface at these times. You sometimes project perfect happiness onto others and believe you are the only one left out. You may also feel uneasy at the thought of what lies beneath the surface of other people's lives.

After a gathering or a workshop that did you good, you dread leaving and returning to ordinary life. It is the moment when everyone in the family or the group goes their own way, between sadness and joy. What seemed complete can show cracks. Rites of passage can strike you as unsettling or unconventional, like a marriage that has not received official recognition. The time may have come to leave or sell the family home. This card also disturbs conformity. The little mishaps and clumsy moments of social occasions happen to you, and they are funnier than they are serious.

Symbolically, the Four is the first solid, ordered form of the original will, with a framework, a rule, a system. This limit carries within it a risk of disorder.

What holds you back

  • You forget to be grateful for what is going well.
  • You dread family or group reunions while also wanting to go.
  • You feel you are the only one left out of happiness, when you are wrongly projecting it onto others.
  • You have trouble leaving a group or a place where you felt good.
  • You are too sociable at work or you fear spoiling the mood, to the detriment of the task.

Love

The old reversed meaning keeps romance, happiness and pleasure, with a pleasure that is sometimes incomplete.

Friendships

You want to see everyone but you dread incompatibilities and social conventions. You may see other people as one big family or as benefactors.

What the card shows

In the Waite-Smith tarot

Four large wands are planted in the foreground, and a large garland hangs between them. Two women raise bouquets of flowers. Beside them, a bridge crosses a moat and leads to an old dwelling. The scene evokes country life, a refuge, a kind of harvest-home celebration, rest, accord, harmony, prosperity and peace. The number four, with its square, says solidity, but Wands do not let themselves be shut in by fences. The figures come out of an enclosed place into an open one: their drive and courage move them from a defensive situation to an open one. They are carried by joy, with the optimism and the wish to celebrate that Fire gives, in a home setting. Love of freedom leads them out together from a closed place before it becomes a prison.

What it means

Four is the first number below the Abyss: things become solid and manifest. Among the Wands, the card is called Completion: what was promised has taken form. What you have built is put in order and works by rules: a solid system, with order, law and government. The card says the fulfillment of something built with effort and work, rest after exertion and the success of a work carried to its end. Aries and Venus together say that you do not establish your work without tact and gentleness. After the departure of the Three, the Four shows arrival and homecoming: a celebration marks the end of a stage or a season of work, with the feeling of a real result. This can take the form of engagements, weddings, graduations, reunions or gatherings, or a return to your family roots. The card can also show an agreement found between opposing camps to restore harmony, or the purchase of a property that gives a solid base for what follows. When you move on to another experience, you can stop to give thanks for everything you have received so far.

Your strengths

You know how to draw conclusions from what you have already learned, through your reasoning. You also know how to restore harmony and bring agreement between people who are in opposition.

What holds you back

  • You can be unprepared, and unreliable or unstable from rushing and worrying.
  • You can sometimes be insincere in spite of your grace.
  • The frame you set for your work limits it, and this limit carries a measure of disorder within it.

What helps

  • Take the time to rest and celebrate what is completed.
  • Work with tact and gentleness to establish your work.
  • Mark the ends of stages with a ritual, a word of thanks or a return to your own people.
