Two of Cups upright

The Two of Cups speaks of love and of the bond between two people. It announces love, passion, friendship, affinity, union, harmony and sympathy. It also touches on relations between the sexes. You are living a bond in which the two people are equal, respect each other and each gain from it. Two different beings are drawn to each other and unite, and that is what makes the relationship alive. The card can mark a marriage, an engagement, a friendship, a passion, or simply an infatuation.

It often marks the beginning of a relationship: the exchange of a promise of friendship, the start of a love story. It can also show a union or a friendship long established, in a lighter tone than that of the Lovers. In both cases, by joining your qualities and abilities through love, you produce in your life something that neither of you would have made alone. Love also gives a larger meaning to the sexuality that leads to it.

The card also speaks of you. It shows action and movement on one side, emotion, sensitivity and a taste for experience on the other, and it is by bringing them together that your life gains value. You can let two parts of yourself talk to each other, the masculine and the feminine, or your outside and your inside, in an exchange where each gives and receives. If you have been through a conflict, the card indicates a wish to forgive or make up, to bring back together what was separated. You may also cooperate or share with someone, try to get past your differences, or come together around a higher goal. Faced with a choice, it says the options can blend rather than oppose each other. It can finally announce agreement with someone on a shared project, or an exchange of promises.

The Two is the first step of the element Water: it is Love in its highest form, a perfect and calm harmony between the masculine and the feminine, which gives great joy. It corresponds to Venus in Cancer.

Your strengths

You show harmony, pleasure, cheerfulness and finesse. You feel compassion and sympathy, and you know how to reach out to others and listen with empathy. You know how to cooperate and share what you have.

What helps

  • Looking for equality and respect in the bond, and accepting that differences complement each other.
  • Meeting the other person halfway, cooperating and sharing.
  • Reconciling what has separated, within yourself and with others, and forgiving if there has been conflict.
  • Bringing action and emotion together in yourself, the part that acts and the part that feels.
  • Joining your abilities with the other person's to get more than you would alone.

Two of Cups reversed

The upright Two of Cups speaks of love, mutual respect and two people who unite while keeping their differences. Reversed, this bond does not form the way you hoped. Messages are contradictory, you step forward and then back, and the relationship feels like a game of attraction and repulsion. A coming together may fail, at least for a time. You meet obstacles or opposition in what you are living in love.

This card does not mean a story is doomed. As long as the other cards in the spread do not confirm the worst, it mainly says that things are not going quite as you hoped: a late date, an argument, a separation of a few days.

It can also show that you are withdrawing from love or refusing it. It can describe a period with no relationship in sight, a passion with no substance, or an affair kept secret. If you are already in a relationship that is going well, it signals passing difficulties. It can point to an obsession, a misunderstanding, a separation, one-sided love, or someone who drags you down. In the hardest cases, it speaks of broken trust, a degraded passion or dashed hopes. You may also be drawn to a relationship that is not good for you. The other cards say whether there is violence, infidelity or sexual incompatibility.

The traditional meaning of the reversed card gathers crossed desires, envy, jealousy, illusion, quarrels, separations and dissatisfaction.

When you project the card onto the other person, you feel they have betrayed love or refuse to meet you halfway. When you turn it toward yourself, it speaks of the balance between your masculine and feminine sides, between what is conscious and what is not. This inner part may stay largely unconscious, and you do not always recognize it. The way others treat you then reflects what you think of yourself. In that case, the opponent you meet in the other shows you things you also recognize in yourself.

What holds you back

  • You get mixed signals and no longer know whether you are moving closer or moving away.
  • You let yourself be drawn to a relationship or a passion that is not good for you.
  • You envy, you are jealous or you let yourself be carried by illusions about the other.
  • You reject love or withdraw from it, and you may keep a relationship hidden.
  • You blame the other for betraying you or not doing their share, when the conflict is also playing out in you.

What helps

Looking first at the relationship you have with yourself, between what you experience as masculine and feminine in you. Doing this inner work before looking in someone else for the qualities you want to develop. Reading the other cards in the spread to know whether the difficulty is passing or more serious.

What the card shows

On the classic card, a young man and a young woman make a mutual pledge, each raising a cup. Above their cups rises the caduceus of Hermes, whose great wings frame a lion's head. One detail of this image already exists in a few very old versions of this card. The lion is red and winged.

The caduceus means healing and wisdom. The lion stands for sexuality and the wings stand for spirit: love gives a wider meaning to the sexual drive that leads toward the other person. The winged lion also shows that passions can become spiritual.

The card speaks of love and its power to heal and to lift up. It shows equality between two people, with respect and shared benefit. Two people who join their different qualities out of love create together something neither would have made alone. In the image, the man stands for action and movement, the woman for emotion, sensitivity and appreciation of experience. By bringing them together, you give value to your life. You can read the card as the union of two parts of yourself, the masculine part and the feminine part, or the outer part and the inner part, which come into accord by giving and receiving.

This card looks like a lighter version of the Lovers. The Lovers shows the strength of a mature sexual relationship, while the Two of Cups puts the emphasis on the start of a relationship, a commitment of friendship, the beginning of a love story. It can also show a lasting union or friendship, on a lighter level.

In another version, a hand comes out of a cloud and holds lotuses. One lotus rises above the other. Water gushes from them, silver and gold, falls on two crossed dolphins on the stem, then into two cups that overflow and flood the bottom of the card. The meaning is the harmony of masculine and feminine, pleasure and gaiety. The colors of this version are the green and calm sea, pink lotuses, amber dolphins and a violet sky.

Meanings: love, passion, friendship, affinity, union, accord, sympathy, a bond between the sexes. Attachment, affection, kindness, empathy, sincerity, engagement, marriage, partnership, cooperation, goodwill.

Your strengths

You feel compassion and sympathy, and you are ready to meet the other person halfway. You know how to bring different options together rather than set them against each other. You look for a bond in which each person gives and receives equally.

What holds you back

  • When the card is reversed, you may receive contradictory messages and live through a game of attraction and rejection, quarrels, or an empty passion.
  • You can scatter yourself in pleasure, do foolish things or waste what you have, if you do not keep the card's harmony.

What helps

  • Look for a way to forgive or reconcile when there has been conflict, to join what was separate.
  • Unite what seems opposed to you, within yourself or with someone else.

Friendships

It can also show a lasting friendship, lighter than that of the Lovers.

Work

It can show a collaboration in which you agree on one shared project.
