Ten of Cups upright

The Ten of Cups is the card of complete, shared joy. It is the peak of the suit of Cups, the suit of love, imagination and dreams: you are filled with what this suit brings. Love, imagination and joy come to you as gifts.

It speaks of contentment and rest of the whole heart. It shows human love and friendship at their highest level. It announces wonder, affection, compatibility, harmonious relationships and a happy home. It speaks first of the happiness of home and family, but it holds for any situation that brings you a surge of joy. It indicates that you recognize the precious qualities of your situation.

It is a success and a happiness that last, because they come from higher than you. They come with calm and peace between people.

In concrete terms, you may live with an extended family or in a loving community, spend a stay in the countryside, welcome guests or be welcomed as a guest of honor. You may have a good reputation in your town. Children may hold a large place in your life. You may have found how to connect your personal life and your working life. The card also evokes the place where you live: your home, your city, your village or your country, and the love you have for them. It speaks of esteem, public honors, security and well-being.

What holds you back

  • You can idealize your home, your country, your relationship or the result of a project: what seems ideal to you is sometimes an overestimate.
  • You can long for an impossible dream, the kind that advertising stages.
  • You can find yourself in a situation that holds more than you wanted or more than is fitting.
  • Depending on how the card is lived, it can lean toward dissipation, debauchery, waste.
  • When you chase pleasure and get everything you wanted, you may discover you no longer wanted it.

What helps

Recognizing the precious qualities of what you are living. Living in harmony with your surroundings and with those around you. Asking yourself whether what looks perfect to you is too perfect only in your head. Receiving joy as a gift.

Home

You love your home and find well-being and security in it.

Ten of Cups reversed

The upright Ten of Cups speaks of shared happiness, home, family and harmonious relationships. Reversed, it touches the same areas and signals problems at home or in your close relationships.

You meet a reminder of reality about what you hoped for. A party, a homecoming or a reunion may be postponed, canceled or leave you emotionally drained. A dream or an ideal image you held may come apart, and the ideal you had of home or partnership may have been an overestimate.

The card can speak of a departure, a break or the loss of what you called home, such as children leaving. It can also speak of incompatibility, divorce or arguments. An emotionally charged situation, often romantic or domestic, has gone badly and produces anger, deceit or violent feelings. The traditional meanings point the same way: irritation, hurt, family quarrel, disagreements, tension, loss of friends, pettiness and anger.

You may also fail to recognize or appreciate the happiness life offers you.

In your family, you may have taken the role of scapegoat or of the one who causes trouble. You may feel ashamed and indignant, for example when you have to accept charity, help or pity. Or you may feel swamped by your family's needs and emotional expectations. A Ten touches the values and beliefs of the family or group rather than those of one person: you may reject those values, refuse to take part in family life or decide not to have children.

The card can also say there is too much of everything: an excess that ends up making you sick of it. It can concern a living environment that is deteriorating, such as a city growing too fast, or an overgrown garden. You or your community may neglect the well-being of those who have less.

Seen from the inside, the reversed card shows your inner family: agreement among the parts of yourself, an emotional fulfillment that does not depend on what comes from outside.

Your strengths

You can find within yourself an emotional fulfillment that does not depend on the outside, a form of inner unity.

What holds you back

  • You may cling to an ideal of home or of a couple that is falling apart.
  • You risk failing to recognize the happiness life offers you.
  • You may feel swamped by your family's needs and expectations.
  • You may take on the role of the one who causes trouble, or feel ashamed of needing help.
  • You may let anger and arguments take over in an emotionally charged situation.
  • You may neglect the well-being of those who have less than you.

What helps

Look at whether the ideal you had of home or of the relationship matches reality. Recognizing the value of what you already have. Looking for your fulfillment within yourself, without making it depend on everything else.

What the card shows

The Ten of Cups is the last card of the suit of Cups, the suit of love, imagination, dreams and the unconscious. The tens symbolize being filled with the quality of the suit. In Cups, that gives joy and wonder at life, extended across the whole sky. The Grail, symbol of love and of the grace of God, lies at the base of this suit: love, imagination and joy come as gifts.

The rainbow is the biblical promise that the world will never again be flooded, and it also carries a more positive promise: life brings happiness, and not only the absence of pain. It symbolizes peace after the storm.

In the image, a man and a woman stand arm in arm and look at the rainbow, celebrating it: they understand what it means. The children dance without looking up. They symbolize innocence, which takes happiness as the natural state of life: they expect it, but do not squander it. Because the card shows a family, it speaks first of domestic happiness, but it can point to any situation that brings a surge of joy.

Its meaning comes down to a few words: wonder, abundant happiness, affection, harmony, harmonious relationships, a happy home. It also speaks of recognizing the precious qualities of a situation, especially when read in contrast with the Ten of Pentacles. According to the traditional meanings, it evokes the country, the town, the house, love of home, reputation, esteem, security and contentment.

In the Golden Dawn tradition, the image shows a hand holding lotuses whose flowers pour water into all the cups, and all of them overflow. One of the upper cups is held sideways by a hand and pours into the cup at upper left. A single lotus flower rises over the top cup: it is the one that feeds it. This card means lasting happiness and success, because they come from above. This happiness is less sensual than that of the previous card and almost no longer truly happy. Depending on the card's dignity, it can also speak of pleasure, dissipation, calm, peace, kindness, pity, generosity or waste.

This version indicates a situation that holds more than what is wanted or appropriate. It describes the pursuit of pleasure crowned with success: when you have got everything you wanted, you often find you no longer want it.

Your strengths

At its best, this card says you live in harmony with your surroundings and with the people around you.

What holds you back

  • You may idealize: a rainbow is an illusion, and what seems ideal to you, whether your home, your country, your partnership or the outcome of a project, may be overrated.
  • You may long for an impossible dream, like the ones advertisements sell.
  • You may fail to recognize and appreciate the happiness life offers you.
  • You may live in a very charged situation, romantic or family, where emotion turns against itself and produces anger or deception.
  • When you get everything you wanted, you may find you no longer wanted it.

What helps

Recognizing what has value in your situation instead of taking it for granted. Taking happiness as a gift of life, and not squandering it. Checking whether what you find ideal really is.

Love

This card speaks of affection, compatibility and harmonious relationships.

Children

Children may play an important part in your life.

Work

You may have found a way to connect your personal and professional life.

Home

It evokes the house, the place where you live, security and contentment.

Friendships

You may live within an extended family or a loving community, and welcome others or be welcomed as an honored guest.
