Knight of Cups upright

The Knight of Cups corresponds to a part of you turned toward imagination, emotions and love. You are idealistic and dreamy, guided by your inner values and your emotions, and you look for romantic pleasure. You have a calm, gentle, poetic and artistic nature.

You are kind and courteous, and you may take the initiative in social contact: making a proposal or sending an invitation. The card also announces an arrival or an approach, sometimes that of a messenger, advances, a proposal. It touches music, dance, spiritual practices, counseling, catering and entertainment that draws on the imagination.

In love, you can win someone over with gifts and attentions, by inviting her to dinner, and offer your deep feelings, your creative imagination and what it takes to meet her emotional needs. You are very sensitive to other people's emotional state and you do everything to keep relationships harmonious and free of conflict.

Your imagination dominates, more than your action. This card shows a moment turned toward yourself, in which you look within, think about your past and your future, and hesitate before concrete steps: of the Knights, it is the one most detached from action. Your situation is fragile and passing: it is an opportunity that goes by and has to be seized.

Your strengths

You are kind, and you respond quickly to what attracts you. You get enthusiastic easily, especially when you are stimulated or stirred awake. You are sensitive to influences that come from outside. You have a natural innocence and purity that make you likable. You can go very deep within yourself and turn this energy into an exploration of your inner world, if you follow a true vision.

What holds you back

  • You lack endurance: you get enthusiastic fast, but it does not last.
  • You stay on the surface, and your depth is hard to reach, even for others.
  • You dream without acting: if you do nothing with your dreams, they stay vague and unconnected to the rest of your life.
  • Your daydreaming can be fed by escapism and self-indulgence rather than by inner principles.
  • You are torn between engagement in the world and your need for passivity, and your imagination produces nothing.
  • Your passivity can be a pose, almost exaggerated, to deny the temptations and desires that disturb your peace.
  • In love, you can become attractive but passive, withdrawn or narcissistic, unwilling to commit.
  • You may see love as entertainment, and make adoration and flattery tools to get what you want, up to conquest followed by abandonment.
  • When you are pushed to act, you may resent others without openly resisting them, and that leads to hypocrisy, manipulation, sometimes lies and tricks.
  • When you are out of balance, you can become indolent, sensual, idle and not very frank.

What helps

  • Making something concrete of your dreams: imagination feeds on action rather than fantasy.
  • Asking yourself what feeds your reverie: inner principles or the wish to escape reality.
  • Following a true vision rather than fleeing your commitments.
  • Seizing what passes by when the opportunity comes.

Knight of Cups reversed

The upright Knight of Cups is gentle, poetic and friendly: he responds quickly to what attracts him and gets enthusiastic easily, but without lasting long. He is very sensitive to the influence of the outside world, and his sensitivity lacks depth. Reversed, this sensitive, tender side becomes more secretive, and the situation is often not what it seems. In your relationships, you may hide your love or use it to reach your own goals. You may also be oversensitive and chase illusions. You are wary of a proposal made to you, or an invitation is withdrawn. You may be cautious about commitment, or live through unreturned love. You may also love mostly the idea of being in love, or love only yourself, which keeps you from giving to others. If you become more direct, what you were keeping hidden comes out into the open. The way you keep adapting to the situation makes you hard to pin down. You can be emotionally dishonest, flattering, fawning or two-faced. This reversed card evokes cunning, artifice, duplicity and deceit. When you are asked to commit or to act, you may stay passive on the surface while resenting those demands inwardly, without openly opposing them. A barrier then forms between you and those who push you to take on your responsibilities, and this can lead to hypocrisy, manipulation, sometimes lies. Your passivity can also be exaggerated to deny desires that disturb your calm. In love, you can be attractive but withdrawn, narcissistic, and unwilling to commit.

Your strengths

You have a gift for imagination and poetry, and you are sensitive to the emotional state of others. You have an innocence and a purity that make you likable. If you follow a real vision rather than running from your commitments, you can explore your inner world deeply.

What holds you back

  • You let yourself be ruled by sadness, tears, nostalgia or emotional insecurity.
  • You drift without energy, overrun by your dreams and fantasies.
  • You move away from emotional involvement.
  • You lose yourself in fantasies instead of bringing your imagination to life through action, so nothing comes of it.

What helps

  • Telling apart what feeds your imagination: deep principles, or escape and daydreams with no real meaning.
  • Acting on your dreams, because imagination is fed by action rather than by fantasy.
  • Naming what you hide and becoming more direct.
  • Examining the proposals made to you with caution and restraint.
  • Working with your dreams to explore their deeper meaning.

What the card shows

The Knight of Cups is a young winged warrior on horseback, holding a cup. He corresponds to the end of Aquarius and most of Pisces, from the 21st degree of Aquarius to the 20th of Pisces.

What the image shows

In the classic version of the card, the knight is not warlike: he advances calmly, wearing a winged helmet. The wings point to the highest qualities of the imagination. The horse is slow, and the knight is lost in the appeal of his cup, which symbolizes imagination. Nothing comes out of this cup, and he has not turned it into something greater. A narrow river crosses arid land, which shows a creative force weaker than in the other Cups court cards.

What it means

The Knight of Cups is the fire of water: water in action, like driving rain or a gushing spring, and also like water that wears away and dissolves things patiently. His character is nonetheless mostly passive, like that of the sign Pisces. He is graceful, poetic, gentle and indolent, but becomes enthusiastic when called upon. He is passively amiable and responds quickly to what attracts him. He gets enthusiastic easily, but does not last. He is very sensitive to outside influences, but his character lacks depth. He keeps a natural innocence and purity, which make him likable, but they stay hard to reach beneath the surface.

At his best, he is the Grail knight on a spiritual quest, or the troubadour who devotes everything to love. He is an idealistic dreamer, guided by inner values and by his emotions, and he moves through realms of romantic pleasure. He has a calm, gentle, poetic and artistic nature. He is gallant and cordial: he makes contact, makes a proposal or issues an invitation. He offers his deepest feelings and his creative imagination, and he courts with gifts. He pays attention to the emotional state of others and tries to please them in order to keep relationships harmonious and avoid conflict. He may also follow a spiritual vision or an intuition, and look for spiritual solutions to practical problems. In the traditional reading, the card evokes arrival, approach, invitation, proposal, attraction and welcome. In old divination, it stands for the beloved young man, the lover.

The Knight is a being of action, while water symbolizes passivity. This contrast makes it hard for him to bring the two together, and his card shows a dreamer who gives his imagination no outlet in the world. Of all the knights, he is the least tied to action, and he hesitates a great deal in front of concrete steps. He turns toward himself, toward the inside. This card describes a phase you pass through, not a whole life.

Your strengths

  • You are graceful, gentle and poetic, with an artistic sense.
  • You are friendly and gallant, and you know how to make the first move toward others.
  • You pick up on the emotional state of others and look for harmony in your relationships.
  • You respond quickly to what attracts you, and you get enthusiastic when stimulated.
  • You have a natural innocence and purity.

What holds you back

  • Your enthusiasm does not last.
  • You are easily influenced and your character lacks depth.
  • You are passive and hesitate to act concretely.
  • You leave your dreams vague and cut off from the rest of your life.
  • You may see love as a distraction, and use seduction and flattery to reach your goal.
  • You may be attractive but distant, reluctant to commit, or turned in on yourself.
  • You may exaggerate your passivity to push away the temptations and desires that disturb your peace.
  • When you are asked to take on your responsibilities, you may resist without showing it, holding on to resentment, which leads to hypocrisy, manipulation and sometimes lying.
  • When the card is badly placed, you are sensual, idle and untruthful.
  • You may be oversensitive, chase illusions, hide your love or use it for your own ends.

What helps

  • Feeding your imagination with inner principles, such as myths and art, rather than with the escape of daydreams, films or books.
  • Acting on your dreams, so they take shape and connect to the rest of your life.
  • Following a real vision rather than fleeing your commitments to others.
  • Turning the Knight's energy into exploration of your inner world.
