Nine of Cups upright

The Nine of Cups, upright, says you are in a situation of almost complete happiness: pleasure, satisfaction and wishes fulfilled. Your wishes and needs are met, and everything seems to be going your way. This card speaks of material happiness and a satisfaction of the heart. It announces success in your projects, especially those that touch on feelings. It also speaks of the joy of seeing what your mind aimed at come true, and of success on the intellectual level. It is one of the best cards in the deck. Part of this happiness comes down to luck. The element Water reaches its point of fulfillment here: it regains stability and shows its most beneficial side.

In this situation, you are surrounded and fulfilled. You may be the one who organizes an event or a presentation, or who hosts a meal, with what you have gathered and earned on display. You know how to imagine what you want with enough precision and clarity to bring it into being.

Your strengths

You have lofty ideas and you do not settle for small, limited ones. You can also show yourself able to give something up for others. You know how to picture what you desire with precision.

What holds you back

  • You boast and talk a lot about yourself.
  • You are overconfident, and that can bring you criticism or gossip.
  • You can be thoughtless at times, despite your goodness and generosity.
  • You can feel pleased with yourself to the point of smugness.
  • You lean toward excess, and your pleasures take up too much room.
  • When everything is accomplished, complacency and slackness set in: you risk letting yourself go and sitting passively in front of the television.
  • You can be alone at the top, and you can forget something important.
  • You may have set aside awkward things that you do not want to show.
  • Complete happiness can be an illusion: total satisfaction does not last and prepares the slackening that follows.

What helps

Accepting that there is no absolute rest and that balance needs movement.

Nine of Cups reversed

Upright, the Nine of Cups speaks of material and emotional satisfaction, fulfilled wishes and well-being. Reversed, it shows what that satisfaction was hiding: mistakes, imperfections and flaws come to light. What was concealed may be exposed. This can come from someone sincere and in good faith, who makes you see what you had not wanted to look at. When you are freed from superficial or false attachments, you feel a sense of liberation.

You are invited to give up an attitude of self-satisfaction and complacency. This sometimes requires lifting the veil on what lies behind the public expression of your feelings. You may also no longer need to keep up a front if you ask yourself what makes you happy and what you really want.

In the area of parties and entertainment, differences of opinion may arise, and it becomes important to clarify information. The upright card's tendency toward excess can also take over: it leads to unrestrained pleasure, superficiality and dependence. Someone is then likely to call you to account. Leaning on past successes harms your current abilities and methods, and you risk being left behind in a fast-changing world.

Another reading exists: inner happiness matters more than outer happiness. The card describes the person who loved pleasure and gives it up in favor of simplicity and reflection. It is also associated with sincerity, truth, loyalty, frankness and freedom. The difficulties it announces are passing and can be clarified and overcome.

Your strengths

  • You are capable of sincerity, frankness and loyalty.
  • You can shed what is superficial to look for what truly makes you happy.

What holds you back

  • You are content with yourself and stay in complacency.
  • You let yourself slide into excess, superficiality or dependence.
  • You count on past successes instead of your present abilities, and you risk staying behind.

What helps

  • Accept being shown your mistakes and let yourself be corrected.
  • Looking at what lies behind what you show of your feelings.
  • Asking yourself what makes you happy and what you really want.
  • Clarifying information when opinions differ.
  • Seeking a simpler, more inner happiness.

What the card shows

The Nine of Cups shows the fulfillment of desires. In the image, a figure has eaten and drunk to satisfaction, and behind him an arched counter holds a large supply of wine. This wine in reserve shows that the future also seems secure. The image shows only the material side of happiness, and the card has other aspects. No one else sits at the table with this figure, and the table is full of collections and trophies on display for admiration. The card speaks of satisfaction, contentment and physical well-being, and also of success and advantage. It is called the wish card: what you desired is fulfilled.

The figure's red hat means he can imagine and picture what he wants with such precision and clarity that he can make it exist.

Nine, in the series of Cups, restores the stability that the previous numbers had lost. Nine is also the number of the Moon, which reinforces the idea of water. The happiness of this card therefore rests partly on luck. This card is one of the best in the deck.

The nines show the compromises we make with life. In Cups, the compromise is to avoid worries and problems by concentrating on ordinary pleasures: a meal, the table, the body's comfort. After hardship or a long period of hard work, nothing serves you better than a simple good time. Some people react badly to this card, because they would like to see themselves as above superficiality.

Your strengths

You have a lofty mind and you are not satisfied with small, limited ideas. You can imagine what you want precisely enough to make it exist. You have an amiable, warm side, even when you talk a lot about yourself.

What holds you back

  • You may boast, talk a lot about yourself and come across as vain.
  • By relying too much on yourself, you risk laying yourself open to criticism, and you are sometimes imprudent despite your good nature.
  • You may feel pleased with yourself to the point of smugness, and leave under the table awkward things you don't want to see.
  • You risk feeling alone at the top, and forgetting something important, as if nobody else were at your banquet.
  • You are tempted by excess and by indulging your appetites.
  • You may settle into laziness when your energy runs out, staying in front of screens instead of acting.

What helps

Simply enjoying a good time after an effort or an ordeal. Asking yourself whether something important has been forgotten or set aside. Not resting on your past successes, because what worked before does not replace your current abilities.

When the card is reversed

It shows mistakes and flaws that were hard to see, and what was hidden comes to light. This sometimes comes from the sincerity and good faith of someone who shows you what was wrong. The result can be a feeling of freedom, once you are detached from what was superficial or false. The reversed card also speaks of truth, loyalty and freedom: staying true to yourself, to others or to a goal then lets you get out of complicated situations. It can also speak of an inner happiness that replaces material pleasures, with a taste for simplicity and contemplation. In that case, you no longer need to keep up a front if you reconsider what makes you happy.
