Four of Cups upright
This card shows a period when you are weary and dissatisfied with your surroundings. After a period of pleasures, you need calm, stability and rest. What life has already given you bores you, and everything ends up looking the same. A new possibility is offered to you, but you see no comfort in it. This apathy can come from a monotonous environment that does not stimulate you. The pleasure or success you have known is nearing its end. It is a stable period in which happiness may or may not continue: this card is too passive to stand for complete happiness. The original pleasure has lost its purity: by letting yourself go with desire, you have introduced wear into it. You may also simply be exhausted by an intense effort.
Your strengths
You go back over your pleasures and ask yourself whether they really suit you. You know how to get through a quiet stretch: when little shows from the outside, new ideas can be born from the slowdown. You know how to take time in nature or wait for the next stage to appear.
What holds you back
- You feel lethargy, apathy and boredom.
- You feel disgust, aversion or discontent.
- You make up imaginary annoyances for yourself, as if everything life offered you left you full without satisfying you.
- You see everything as worthless and uninteresting: nothing seems worth getting up for or looking into.
- With studied indifference, you ignore or turn down a gift, an opportunity or an offer of friendship.
- You take some things for granted to the point of making no effort.
What helps
- Resting, withdrawing for a while or going on vacation.
- Enjoying the present moment while it lasts.
- Looking at the new possibility offered to you: it resembles what once made you happy and may bring you satisfaction.
- Stepping out of yourself to turn toward the world, its possibilities and other people.
- Letting the quiet stretch run its course, without forcing, until the next stage appears.
Love
You may live through unsatisfying relationships or heartache. This card speaks less of love and marriage than the previous card of the suit.
Body and energy
You may simply be exhausted by sustained effort.
Four of Cups reversed
Upright, this card describes weariness, boredom and indifference: nothing interests you or gives you pleasure. Reversed, it comes out of that state. You look for new opportunities to overcome boredom and passivity. In trying to bring your life back to life, you may reconsider possibilities you had set aside. What you mostly lack is a sign or an intuition telling you which studies, friendships or situations to turn toward. The card pulls you out of yourself and opens you to the world and its possibilities. It brings novelty: new relationships, new ideas, new knowledge. It shows enthusiasm and a wish to seize opportunities. New solutions to old problems may arrive unexpectedly. Your sensitivity to messages from the unseen may also increase.
The card can also indicate restlessness: you cannot stay put or meditate peacefully. You are coming out of a period of discontent and you are hungry for new experiences. If your old relationships bore you, you readily go toward new people, not necessarily choosing them well, simply drawn by their novelty. You may have premonitions, sometimes anxious ones. When you project this card onto others, you see them either as stubborn and closed to experience, or as fickle, moving from one fashion to the next and quickly bored.
Your strengths
You look for a way out of routine and passivity.
What holds you back
- You are restless and find it hard to stay quiet.
- You may throw yourself toward new people without choosing them with discernment, only because they are new.
- You may have an uneasy foreboding.
- At the extreme, you may be so absorbed in dreaming, meditation or imagination that you refuse to engage with your real life.
What helps
Reconsidering the options you had refused. Watching for the sign or intuition that shows where to commit. Recognizing the new possibilities that come to you and opening yourself to them. Using divination and oracle tools, which the card suggests on the shamanic level.
Friendships
You are drawn to new acquaintances when old relationships bore you. New relationships come your way.
What the card shows
The classic image
A young man sits under a tree and looks at three cups set on the grass in front of him. An arm comes out of a cloud and offers him a fourth cup. Yet his face shows discontent with everything around him. He has had enough of what the world offers and sees no comfort in the cup held out to him. The card therefore speaks of disgust, weariness and imaginary troubles born of a surfeit of pleasures. It also carries the idea of mixed pleasure.
The image from the old initiatory tradition
A hand holds a lotus branch; white water flows from the flower at the top of the card. This water fills the two upper cups, which overflow into the two lower cups, which do not overflow. Two leaves run to the right and left of the center and form a cross between the four cups. The Moon and Cancer are inscribed on the card: it corresponds to the last third of Cancer, ruled by the Moon. Pleasure is described as having nearly reached its end, in a period of stability that may or may not last. It is a state too passive to stand for complete happiness, and it carries some discomfort: you receive pleasure or kindness from others, but with unease.
What the numbers and the planets say
Four belongs to Chesed, the sphere of Jupiter, which gives breadth and generosity. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, and Cancer is ruled by the Moon: all the elements of the card agree, which makes it very rich, almost too generous. The Moon is at home in Cancer, but the sign is placed so as to imply weakness and surrender to desire, which puts seeds of decline in the fruit of pleasure. Since water is a weak element, ill suited to controlling itself, pleasure is somewhat unstable and purity has been lost on the way to satisfaction. Four is also the number of limitation and restriction: it is a stopping point in the series of numbers. It consolidates duality and insists on individuality.
What the card indicates for you
After a period of pleasures, you may need calm, stability and rest. You may look for meditation, contemplation or time away to regain serenity. You may also feel lethargy, apathy and boredom, have doubts about your excesses and feel disgust or discontent. Nothing interests you or gives you pleasure. You may ignore or refuse a gift, an opportunity or a gesture of friendship, or take something for granted to the point of making no effort. Next to the Ace of Cups, this card shows an apathetic attitude that keeps you from appreciating what life offers you, without cancelling the opportunity. In a creative situation, it stands for a fallow period in which little shows from the outside while new ideas take shape in the rest. Its traditional words are weariness, boredom, dejection, irritation, dissatisfaction and distress of mind.
What holds you back
- You feel boredom, apathy and weariness, and nothing pleases you anymore.
- You have doubts about your past excesses, with disgust and discontent.
- You refuse or ignore an opportunity or a gesture of friendship, or you take what you have for granted and make no effort.
- You think you have reached the peak of what does you good and forget what made it possible.
What helps
- Taking the rest you need after a period of pleasures.
- Seeking meditation, contemplation or time apart, or taking time off.
- Spending time in nature.
- Letting imagination and daydreaming sort out your ideas.
- Waiting for the next step to show itself.
- Enjoying the present moment without expecting it to last forever.
